Lovina
Black-sand beaches, dawn dolphin trips and a much slower pace — Bali's north coast, a world away from the south.
Updated August 2026
Lovina sits on Bali's north coast, over the central mountains from the south-coast towns most visitors stick to. The pace shows it: calm, reef-protected water instead of surf breaks, black volcanic sand instead of white, and a fraction of the crowds. It's less a single town than a strip of fishing villages that have grown up around a handful of guesthouses and dive shops.
Who Lovina suits
Best for travellers who've already done the south coast and want genuine quiet, or anyone basing a trip around north Bali's waterfalls and hot springs. It's a real detour — see getting around before committing days to it.
The Lovina highlights
Dawn dolphin-watching
Small wooden jukung boats head out before sunrise to see pods of dolphins offshore — Lovina's best-known outing, and worth the early start.
Banjar hot springs
Naga-carved fountains feed a series of warm public pools set in a garden, a short drive from the beach.
Brahma Vihara Arama
Bali's largest Buddhist monastery, built in traditional Balinese style on a hillside near Banjar — open to respectful visitors.
Reef snorkelling
Calmer, more sheltered water than the south coast makes for easy snorkelling close to shore, with far fewer boats.
Gitgit waterfall
The easiest waterfall to reach without a detour if you're already up north — a short, gentle walk from the main road.

Accommodation is modest and noticeably cheaper than the south coast — a handful of mid-range resorts exist, but most stays are small family-run guesthouses.
| Style | Typical setting | From |
|---|---|---|
| Guesthouse | Simple beachfront rooms | USD 12–22/night |
| Mid-range hotel | Pool, sea view | USD 30–55/night |
| Boutique resort | A handful of higher-end options | USD 60–110/night |
Plan a full day for the drive
Lovina is roughly 2.5–3 hours from the airport or south-coast towns, over the mountains via Bedugul — noticeably further than any other region on this list. Many visitors break the drive with a stop at Ulun Danu Beratan temple or the Handara gate along the way. Once there, a scooter or short walks cover the town itself.
